The Psychometric Properties of the Arabic Version of the Forgiveness Scale for Marital Abuse Among a Sample of Married Individual in Saudi Society
Abstract
The current study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of the Marital Offense-Specific Forgiveness Scale (MOFS) among a sample of married individuals, to determine their level of forgiveness, and to explore differences in mean scores based on gender. The study employed a descriptive methodology and was applied to a convenient sample of married individuals (n = 210). Data collection relied on a demographic questionnaire and the Marital Offense-Specific Forgiveness Scale (MOFS) developed by Paleari et al. (2009).Results from the confirmatory factor analysis indicated that the scale exhibited an excellent fit model, as confirmed by goodness-of-fit indices: the chi-square to degrees of freedom ratio was 2.22, the Comparative Fit Index (CFI) was 0.95, the Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) was 0.07, the Incremental Fit Index (IFI) was 0.94, the Tucker-Lewis Index (TLI) was 0.94, and the Goodness-of-Fit Index (GFI) was 0.92.Results from convergent validity revealed a significant positive correlation between the forgiveness scale and emotional intimacy (r = 0.42, p < 0.01), and a significant negative correlation between the resentment/avoidance subscale and emotional intimacy (r = −0.62, p < 0.01).Divergent validity results showed a non-significant negative correlation between the benevolence subscale and self-love (r = −0.04), and a significant positive correlation between the resentment/avoidance subscale and self-love (r = 0.91).Reliability results indicated that the total scale score and its subscales demonstrated internal consistency across Cronbach’s alpha, omega coefficient, and split-half methods, with reliability coefficients of 0.52, 0.60, and 0.73, respectively. The findings showed a high level of benevolence in marital offense situations, a moderate level of resentment/avoidance, and an overall high level of general forgiveness, though with a small effect size. Significant gender differences were found in favor of males on the benevolence subscale and in favor of females on the resentment/avoidance subscale
