Errors Analysis of Solving Inequalities Among Mathematics Majors at the University of Jordan
Keywords:
Inequality, Common Errors, Math EducationAbstract
This study aimed at diagnosing errors that occurred in
solving inequalities among mathematics majors at the University of
Jordan. For the purpose of this study, one test was developed and
administered to 188 male and female students majoring in
mathematics who had completed Calculus 101.The results of this
study revealed some common errors, such as: misconceptions,
confusing an inequality with an equation, using commutative
multiplication in solving inequalities, and changing the direction of
inequality when multiplying by a negative number. Some other
calculation errors and careless errors were also recorded. The
common errors ranged between 5.7% for changing the direction of
inequality when multiplying by a negative number, and 22.5% for
conceptual errors. The study recommended that faculty members
emphasize the subject of inequalities for freshmen and to administer
tests in order to categorize them and develop the appropriate
treatment plans
