Abstract

This study aimed to investigate basic education school of second cycle students’ perceptions in the Sultanate of Oman. These perceptions are about their parents’ support in performing homework, the level of their motivation towards performing homework, and the correlation exists between extrinsic motivation and students' performance. A descriptive research approach was used. A questionnaire was developed and administered to 262 male and female students of the second cycle in Muscat Governorate. The results showed that students in the second cycle strongly believe that their parents will help them with their homework. These students are also highly motivated to do their homework for personal reasons and somewhat motivated by outside factors. In addition, students' perceptions of their parents’ support in performing homework correlated positively with intrinsic motivation and negatively with extrinsic motivation towards performing the homework. Gender had no statistically significant effect on finding differences between students' perceptions, while the level of achievement had a statistically significant effect on finding differences in students' motivation towards performing the homework, as intrinsic motivation increases with the increase in students' academic achievement
