The Predictability of Emotional Intelligence in Academic Passion among University Students

This study aimed to investigate the predictive ability of emotional intelligence in academic passion in its two dimensions (harmonious and obsessive) among the students of Al-Balqa Applied University in Salt, Jordan. The study sample consisted of (527) male and female students. Two scales were used in this study: the academic passion scale and the emotional intelligence scale. The results of the study showed that the level of harmonious academic passion among university students is high, the level of obsessive academic passion is medium and there are statistically significant differences in the harmonious academic passion attributed to the study year in favor of first-year students and that the obsessive academic passion declines statistically as the student proceeds through years of study. The findings also showed that there are no statistically significant differences in the two dimensions: harmonious and obsessive academic passion attributed to major and gender. The results also showed that emotional intelligence contributed to the prediction of harmonious academic passion through the dimensions: emotion regulation and social communication, where the total variance explained by these two dimensions combined in harmonious academic passion is (33.8%). The results also showed that emotional intelligence contributed to the prediction of obsessive academic passion through the social communication and empathy dimensions, as the cumulative explained variance due to these two dimensions combined in obsessive academic passion was (15.1%).
