This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of a group
counseling program in reducing stress and pessimism among mothers
of Jordanian children with cancer. The study sample, which consisted
of twenty (20) participants, was divided randomly into two equal
groups: an experimental group which received a counseling program
based on cognitive behavioral therapy approach, and a control group
that did not receive any counseling program. Results of Analysis of
Covariance [ANCOVA], for both stress and pessimism scales showed
that there were statistically significant pre-post test differences
between the experimental group and the control group, where the
level of stress and the pessimism among mothers in the experimental
group decreased significantly compared to the control group. Further,
results of post-and follow-up tests comparisons for each of the
dependent variables showed that while levels of stress increased,
levels of pessimism decreased, but these differences were not
significant.
